Wet Hot Summer Shorts - Pattern Release

I have the great pleasure of announcing you the release of my newest pattern : Wet Hot Summer Shorts as part as Holla Knits Summer 2016 collection!

After seeing Wet Hot American Summer, I wanted to bring sexy to my summer wardrobe! So I designed those mid-waist shorts to wear in the city or at the beach all summer with big sandals and a cute crop top. What I enjoyed most when knitting those shorts were all the different techniques I got to use. I’ve been obsessed with grafting in pattern lately and I love the looks of those horizontal cabled legs! The cable pattern is worked flat and then the last stitches are grafted with the provisional cast on. Stitches are then picked up on the side of the cable panel and the rest of the shorts is worked in stockinette stitch in the round, with short rows to shape the back. The waistband has an elastic band inserted for a perfect fit. This pattern is highly customizable, you can make longer legs, add more room in the back and make a lower or higher waist as you wish!

Knitting - From passion to business

I first started designing over two years ago. I was still a student then and I had a lot of free time to knit. When I saw that anyone could easily put patterns up on Ravelry, I immediately wanted to do it. Of course, it took a little more time, I found out that designing and writing patterns is something you need to learn, try out and perfect over time. Two years after, I still have a lot to learn, way more than I thought when I first started out.

Designing is working

At first, designing was a hobby to me. A way to make a few bucks creating things that I was proud of. I did it very seriously, and did my best to achieve the best possible pattern but somehow I didn't really saw this as a valid career choice. I think it's the problem with all creative freelancers. At which point can you really be serious about your business? When you are so passionate about what you do, it's hard to consider it work. It's only when I became really serious about designing that I started using the verb "work" to describe what I'm doing. I stopped saying "I'm designing"" to say "I'm working on this design" and it doesn't make it less fun! Even if it's not full time yet I have the chance to have a job I love so much.

Designing as a career

What made me consider this career choice is the combination of two factors. First I was unemployed and starting to doubt my initial path, secondly I started having designs accepted in publications. This is the best boost of confidence there can be for a new designer. I had previously sent submissions once in a while, just in case. But my layout wasn't pretty, my sketches and swatches far from perfect. (I'll do a post soon about design submissions) When I became unemployed, I had a lot of time to perfect those things. So I sent one submission, only one at first, for a Knit Picks collection, and it got accepted. This was my first big break, I got offered a lot more money than what I make with my self-published design, it would get my name out there and I could finally consider this business seriously, by putting it on my resume, telling people that I am a knitwear designer when they ask me what I do. I finally felt legitimate. And so of course I started submitting way more, got a lot of accepted designs, started working with different magazines and editors... It's only been six months but I've learned so much! 

Manage it all

Now my first published design will get released in the next few weeks and I can't wait to see the response.

But while my first designs are released, I'm working on another batch of designs, and I'm also trying to find time to keep submitting new designs so I'm never out of work. Between promotion, design and submissions, all of those things having tight deadlines, plus a day job, organization gets tricky and I never have the time to do everything I want. That's also a sign how much I love my job, I can't get enough of it! 

My next step is to find a day job in a local yarn store, so I can learn more things related to this industry.

J'ai commencé le stylisme tricot il y a plus de deux ans. J'étais encore étudiante à l'époque et j'avais beaucoup de temps libre pour tricoter. Quand j'ai vu à quel point c'était facile pour tout un chacun de mettre à disposition et de vendre des modèles sur Ravelry, je me suis immédiatement dit que je voulais le faire. Bien sur, cela a pris plus de temps que ce que je pensais. J'ai découvert que créer et écrire des modèles de tricot, ça s'apprend, ça demande beaucoup d'essais et un perfectionnement qui ne vient qu'avec le temps. Deux ans plus tard, j'ai encore beaucoup à apprendre, bien plus que ce que je pensais quand je me suis lancée.

Le stylisme tricot, un travail

Au départ, le stylisme tricot était un hobby pour moi. Une façon de gagner un peu d'argent de poche en créant des choses dont j'étais fière. Je le faisais avec beaucoup de sérieux, et faisait de mon mieux pour proposer des modèles de la meilleure qualité possible, mais je ne voyais pas ça vraiment comme un choix de carrière possible. Je pense que c'est le problème avec toutes les professions créatives en freelance. A partir de quel moment peut-on être vraiment sérieux sur notre business ? Quand on est passionné par ce que l'on fait, c'est dur de le considérer comme du travail. C'est seulement quand j'ai commencé à considérer sérieusement cette profession que je me suis mise à utiliser le verbe "travailler" pour décrire ce que je fais. J'ai cessé de dire "je tricote", "je design", mais je me suis mise à dire "je travaille sur ce design", et ça n'en fait pas moins quelque chose de fun ! Même si ce n'est pas encore mon job à plein temps, j'ai la chance d'avoir un travail que j'aime beaucoup !

Le stylisme tricot, une carrière

Ce qui m'a fait considérer ce choix de carrière est la combinaison de deux facteurs. Tout d'abord, j'étais au chômage et je commençais à douter de mon choix initial. Ensuite, j'ai commencé à avoir des designs acceptés dans des publications. C'est le meilleur boost de confiance qui peut exister pour une nouvelle styliste. J'avais auparavant répondu à des appels à projets de temps en temps, au cas où. Mais ma mise en page, mes sketchs et échantillons étaient loin d'être parfaits. (Je ferai bientôt, un post à ce sujet) Quand je me suis retrouvée au chômage, j'ai eu beaucoup de temps pour perfectionner tout cela. Alors j'ai envoyé une submission, une seule au départ, pour une collection Knit Picks, et elle a été acceptée. C'était le début de la gloire. On m'a offert une bien plus grosse somme d'argent que ce que je gagne en publiant moi-même mes modèles sur le net, j'allais me faire un nom et je pouvais enfin considérer sérieusement ce business, en le faisant figurer sur mon CV, en disant aux gens que je créé des modèles de tricot quand on me demande ce que je fais. Je me sentais enfin légitime. Et bien sur, je me suis mise à répondre à beaucoup plus d'appels à projets, j'ai eu pleins d'autres designs acceptés, je me suis mise à travailler avec différents magazines... Cela ne fait que six mois, mais j'ai déjà tellement appris

Maintenant, j'en suis arrivée au moment où mes premiers designs vont être publiés dans les prochaines semaines, et j'ai hâte de voir ce que ça va donner !

Mais en même temps que mes premiers designs sortent, je travaille sur une autre fournée de designs, et j'essaye de trouver le temps également de répondre à des appels à projets pour avoir toujours du travail dans le futur. Entre la promotion, la création, les submissions, toutes ces choses ayant des deadlines parfois bien courtes, plus un job d'appoint, l'organisation devient compliquée et je n'ai jamais le temps de faire tout ce que je veux. C'est également un signe que j'aime beaucoup mon job, je ne m'en lasse pas !
Mon projet à court terme est de trouver un job dans un magasin de laine, pour apprendre encore plus de choses sur ce domaine.

Summer Shorts for Holla Knits - Preview

Treboul Shawl - One year after

Treboul Shawl, still wearing it, still loving it!

With the arrival of spring, I resurected my Treboul Shawl from under my pile of scarf and started wearing it again. It has kept all of its softness and it still looks amazing.

After one year, I realise I wear it way more as a scarf than as a shawl. It's a very versatile pattern.

The name Treboul comes from the place when I learned to sail when I was a kid. I went to summer camp there, and I have such great memories. There was a mysterious island, with scary rocks, I broke my little finger with a centreboard, I fell in love and was asked to dance by the cutest boy, we crossed the bay by boat and slept in small tents during a storm. I heard of this place many years later when my great aunt had Alzeimer and went on and on about her childhood in Treboul, her father's boat, and how she wanted to go back. So this is a very important place to me, and I'm very glad I named this design after it.

I recently made a spreadsheet of all my designs to date, scratched the numbers, and I realized that Treboul Shawl was by best-seller so far. I hope you will keep on liking it as much as I do.

Avec l'arrivée du printemps, j'ai ressorti mon châle Treboul de sous ma pile d'écharpes et j'ai pu recommencer à la porter. Il a gardé toute sa douceur et sa beauté.

Après un an, je me rend compte que je le porte en réalité plus comme une écharpe qu'un châle, c'est un modèle très versatile.

Le nom Treboul vient du lieu où j'ai appris à faire de la voile quand j'étais petite. J'allais en colonie de vacance là-bas, et j'en garde de beaux souvenirs. Il y avait une île mystérieuse avec des rochers dangereux, je me suis cassé le petit doigt avec une dérive, je suis tombée amoureuse et le garçon le plus mignon m'a invitée à danser, nous avons traversé la baie en bateau et dormi sous tente pendant une terrible tempête. J'ai entendu parler de ce lieu de nombreuses années plus tard, quand ma grande tante, atteinte d'Alzheimer, parlait en boucle de son enfance à Treboul, du bateau de son père, elle voulait sans cesse y retourner. C'est donc un lieu important pour moi, et je suis heureuse d'avoir nommé ce châle après lui.

J'ai récemment compilé tous mes designs dans un tableau, et j'ai réalisé que le châle Treboul était mon best-seller en date. J'espère que vous continuerez à l'apprécier autant que moi.

Great news

I sent a submission a few weeks ago and my design was accepted in a publication ! It will be my first design published in a collection and a good one at that ! I'm so proud and excited ! Of course, it will remain a secret before publication, but I can tell you that it's a knitted accessory. And as I knitted a complete item for the submission, I'm pretty confident about this design. I can't wait to receive my yarn support and get to work !

J'ai répondu à un appel à projet il y a quelques semaines, et mon design a été accepté dans une publication ! Ce sera mon premier modèle publié dans une collection, et pas des moindres ! Je suis tellement fière ! Bien sur, cela restera secret jusqu'à la publication, mais je peux vous dire qu'il s'agit d'un accessoire tricoté. Et comme je l'ai tricoté en entier pour l'appel à projet, je suis très confiante pour ce design. J'ai hâte de recevoir ma laine et de me mettre au travail !

New cable design

A few weeks ago, I made a mood board for new cables design. I found a lot of inspiration looking at architecture pictures, especially in the geometry of sovietic architecture and by taking the word "cable" in its litteral meaning.

I chose some Studio Donegal Aran Tweed yarn that my sister brought me back from Dublin and started playing a bit with cables, having these architectural forms in mind. And here is a sneak peek of a first gauge swatch ! My design changed a bit while I was knitting so it won't actually look like that but I now have a straight idea for a hat and maybe a matching cowl, who knows ? Will knit and see !

Il y a quelques semaines, j'ai fait une mood board pour de nouveau modèles à torsades. J'ai trouvé beaucoup d'inspiration en regardant des photos d'architectures, en particulier dans la géométrie de l'architecture soviétique et en prenant le mot "cable" (torsade en anglais) dans son sens littéral.

J'ai choisi une pelote de Studio Donegal Aran Tweed que ma soeur m'a ramenée de Dublin et j'ai commencé à m'amuser avec les torsades, tout en gardant ces formes architecturales à l'esprit. Et voilà un petit aperçu d'un premier échantillon ! Mon dessin a un peu changé pendant que je tricotait donc ça ne ressemblera pas exactement à ça au final, mais j'ai maintenant une idée précise pour un bonnet, et peut-être un col assorti, qui sait ? Tricoterai et verrai !

Verdon Socks - New release

I just released my Verdon Socks.
I started a new job two months ago and I have way less time to knit and design, but I still managed to find the time to finish this sock design and I'm pretty proud of it !

My next design is a bulky sweater, but I struggled with the sleeves so I put it off and I think it's now time to take it out of the closet and make it work !

Maëlle Scarf

I just released the pattern (only in english for now) of this new scarf that I was telling you about.

It's a very simple lace scarf knitted with less than 2 skeins of Drops Kid Silk (that can easily be substituted for Rowan Kidsilk Haze). The pattern is a 16 rows repeat, with all wrong side rows purled, so it's suitable for a beginner in lace knitting. It's charted and written, and you can download it right now for free !

The name of this scarf is my sister's name : Maëlle, because I designed it for her birthday (she still doesn't know though, her birthday is in a month, I'm pretty ahead of time for once !). She loves very soft fabric and always wears tons of stylish dark scarfs, so I'm sure she'll love this one too !

Update, work in progress and exciting new designs

I haven't posted much here in the past few months, so it's time for a little update. 

In december, I went on a train trip all around eastern Europe, and brought tons of yarns and inspiration. 

Two of my friends asked me for matching cowl and hats. I designed them between Hamburg and Budapest. You can see little wagons on the bottom, and castles lost in the mountains in the middle, that I saw from the train window while crossing Hungaria. I added huge pom poms to the hats and gifted these to my friends, but they agreed to a photoshoot sometime soon, so I'll have pretty pictures to release these designs. I'm still hesitating between two names : Rail traveller or Trans-european Hat and Cowl. I'm open to any suggestions !

Je n'ai guère posté sur ce blog ces derniers temps, alors il est temps de faire un petit point.

En décembre, je suis partie en interrail dans toute l'Europe de l'est, et j'ai ramené des tonnes de laines et d'inspirations.

Deux de mes amis m'ont demandé des bonnets et cols assortir. Je les ai créé entre Hambourg et Budapest. Vous pouvez voir les petits wagons en bas, et les châteaux perdus dans les montagnes au milieu, que j'ai vu depuis ma fenêtre de train en traversant la Hongrie. J'ai ajouté deux gros pom poms aux bonnets, et j'ai offert le tout à mes amis, mais ils sont d'accord pour un photoshoot un de ces jours, alors j'aurai de jolies photos pour sortir le modèle. J'hésite encore entre deux noms : Rail traveller ou Trans-european Hat and Cowl. Si vous avez des suggestions !

In Skopje, I found a huge skein of handspun natural yarn in the Bazaar. The man was selling hand-knitted items, and I think the skein was there just for decoration, so he was quite surprised when I asked him about the yarn. The price was ridiculous to me (I should buy yarn in Macedonia more often), but I think it made his week and when he got home to his wife, he probably told her "stop knitting, there's no use, now the tourists are buying the yarn !"

I still don't know what to do with these 500 grams, I don't even now what weight it is, dk ? worsted ? I've got some experimenting to do !

A Skopje, j'ai trouvé une énorme boule de laine filée à la main dans le Bazar. Le marchand vendait des objets tricotés main, et je pense que la pelote servait juste de décoration, alors il était un peu surpris quand je lui ai demandé la laine. Le prix était vraiment dérisoire pour moi, mais je pense qu'il a du rentrer et dire à sa femme "plus la peine de tricoter, les touristes achètent la laine maintenant !"

Je ne sais toujours pas que faire avec ces 500 gralles. Je ne sais même pas de quelle grosseur de laine il s'agit !

In Ljubljana, I found the most amazing yarn store called Soven filled with natural yarn and fibers of all colors. I bought 3 skein of a grey aran 50%alpaca 50% wool, and when I got home, I immediately found the perfect project for it : Little Wave cardigan, by Gudrun Johnston. The gauge was off so I had to make some modification, but I'll talk some more about this cardigan in another post when it's finished (I still need to knit the front bands, collar and pockets).

A Ljubljana, j'ai trouvé un magasin de laine génial, rempli de laines et de fibres naturelles de toutes les couleurs. J'ai acheté trois pelotes d'une laine aran grise 50%alpaga, 50%laine, et dès que je suis rentrée, j'ai trouvé le projet parfait : Little Wave cardigan, by Gudrun Johnston. L'échantillon ne correspondait pas, donc j'ai du faire quelques modifications, mais je vous en reparlerai plus dans un autre post, quand le gilet sera fini.

Back from my rail trip, I spent christmas in Padova with my family (I think I travelled more in this month of december than I ever did in my entire life before). On our second night there, we arrived at dusk to the biggest place of the city, Prato della Valle, and it was covered in a huge fog through which we could barely distinguish the beautiful statues. It was a very strange, gloomy atmosphere. The third day, when we crossed once again that place, it was snowing and everything was white and peaceful. When I got back, I was hanted by this place and these two different times, and I designed Padova hat, a super bulky hat for the snow and fog in Padova. (I'll release the pattern as soon as I'm able to take pretty pictures)

De retour de mon voyage en train, j'ai passé Noël à Padoue en famille (je crois avoir plus voyagé pendant ce mois de décembre que pendant tout le reste de ma vie). Le deuxième soir, on est arrivé au crépuscule sur la plus grande place de la ville, Prato della valle, et elle était couverte d'un épais brouillard, on parvenait à peine à distinguer les belles statues, il y avait une atmosphère étrange, un peu lugubre. Le lendemain, quand on a traversé de nouveau cette place, c'était sous la neige cette fois, tout était blanc et apaisé. En rentrant, j'était hantée par la vision de cette place à ces deux moments, et j'ai créé un bonnet : Padova Hat, en grosse laine bulky, pour la neige et le brouillard sur Padoue. (Je sortirai le modèle dès que j'aurai pu prendre de belles photos).

I also finished this design that I was talking about in november. It's a sock design that I called Verdon because of the house my girlfriend has in Le-Verdon-sur-Mer, near the beach, that belonged to her grandmother and has a very 60s-retro charm. I really love this design, and I'm currently looking for testers here (I'm hoping to release it in February), but I can't seem to find anyone interested, so I'm starting to wonder if it's going to work. Maybe it's not original enough ?

J'ai aussi fini ce design dont je vous parlais en novembre. C'esr une paire de chaussettes que j'ai appellées Verdon à cause de la maison que ma copine possède au Verdon-sur-Mer, près de la plage. Cette maison appartenait à sa grand-mère, et elle a gardé tout son charme retro des 60s. J'aime beaucoup ce design, et je cherche actuellement des testeurs ici, mais pour l'instant je ne trouve personne intéressé, alors je commence à me poser des questions. Ce n'est peut-être pas assez original ?

And finally, I just finished this morning knitting a pretty lace scarf for my sister's birthday. It's blocking right now so I don't have a picture yet, but I plan on writing the pattern and releasing it as a free one in a few days, so I'll tell you more about it very soon !

Et pour finir, je viens juste d'achever ce matin une jolie écharpe en dentelle pour l'anniversaire de ma soeur. Elle est en train de sécher, alors je n'ai pas encore de photo, mais je pense écrire le modèle et le sortir comme patron gratuit dans les prochains jour, donc je vous en dirai plus très bientôt !
