This cowl is my first finished project of the GAL, and a christmas present for my mother.
Last christmas, in Padova, she lost the last cowl I knitted her. We went back to all the places where she could have lost it without finding it. I think someone picked it up and kept it for themselves. And she was so sad because it was her favorite cowl, she wore it all the time.
So I decided to make her another one. So I bought some Drops Alpaca, the same yarn I used for her previous cowl so it would have the same texture in about the same colours. But I didn't want to make the exact same as it's a pattern I have already knitted twice (
Mojave by Jill Zielenski), and it's a bit sad to offer the same gift, I wanted something new.
I waited a few months, couldn't find the perfect pattern, thought of designing one but I didn't have the time and inspiration. And finally, at the beginning of the GAL, when I browse through all the amazing patterns by participating designers, I found this one :
Color Infusion by Meridith Shepherd, and it's perfect !
I wanted the cowl to be tighter to really keeps the neck warm, plus my gauge was a bit bigger so I casted on only 160 stitches. I started with chart 2 (the two-colors chart) because I hadn't yet decided how to combine my three colors for chart 1.
It is a really simple pattern, with enough colorwork to keep you awake but not too difficult so you can watch TV (I watched the whole 4th season of American Horror Story while knitting it !). All the colorwork cowls I previously knitted were knitted from side to side with a provisional cast on then grafted to the last row. I really appreciated the construction of Color Infusion, which is way more simple with just a regular cast on, you knit one side, then the other, and sew both sides together in the end. I really don't like provisional cast ons, especially with such a soft and thin yarn, so it saved some time !
The pattern is well-written, and I really liked the blank charts in the end to try out your color pattern with colored pencils before !
I really like the tweedy look of my colors working together. They are definitely my mother's favorite colors so I'm sure she will like it and be able to wear the cowl with everything. Now I can't wait for christmas to gift it to her !
Ce col est le premier projet que je termine pendant le GAL, et c'est un cadeau de Noël pour ma mère.
L'hiver dernier, à Padoue, elle a perdu le dernier col que je lui ai tricoté. On a refait tous les endroits où elle aurait pu le perdre sans succès, je pense que quelqu'un a dû le ramasser et se l'approprier. Elle était très triste car c'était son col adoré qu'elle portait tout le temps.
Alors j'ai décidé de lui en tricoter un nouveau. J'ai acheté quelques pelotes de Drops Alpaca, la même laine que j'avais utilisée pour que le col ait la même texture, et à peu près dans les mêmes couleurs. Mais je ne voulais pas tricoter encore le même modèle car je l'ai déjà fait deux fois (
Mojave de Jill Zielenski), et je trouvais un peu triste de lui ré-offrir exactement le même col, je voulais quelque chose de nouveau.
J'ai attendu quelques mois, ne parvenais pas à trouver le modèle parfait, j'ai songé à en créer un mais je n'avais ni le temps ni l'inspiration. Finalement, au début du GAL, en regardant la sélection de superbes modèles des designers participants, je suis tombé sur ce col :
Color Infusion by Meridith Shepherd, et c'est le col parfait !
Je voulais que le col soit plus petit que celui du modèle pour être bien proche du cou, et mon échantillon était en plus un peu plus large donc je n'ai monté que 160 mailles. J'ai commencé avec la 2è grille (à deux couleurs) avant de me décider pour ma combinaison de 3 couleurs.
C'est un modèle très simple à suivre, avec assez de jaquard pour vous garder éveillée, mais assez facile pour regarder la TV en même temps (j'ai regardé toute la saison 4 de American Horror Story en le tricotant !) Tous les cols en jaquard que j'ai tricoté auparavant était tricoté de côté à côté avec un montage de mailles provisoire et ces mailles sont ensuites graftées au dernier rang. J'ai vraiment apprécié la construction de Color Infusion qui est beaucoup plus simple avec juste un montage de mailles normal, on tricote un côté puis l'autre à la suite, et on coud les deux ensemble à la fin. Je n'aime pas vraiment les mailles provisoires, surtout avec une laine si molle et fine, alors j'ai gagné pas mal de temps !
Le modèle est bien écrit et j'ai bien aimé les grilles vierges pour tester ses couleurs aux crayons de couleur avant !
J'aime beaucoup l'aspect tweedé de mes couleurs ensembles. Et ce sont vraiment les couleurs préférées de ma mère alors je suis sure qu'elle va pouvoir porter ce col avec tout. Maintenant, j'ai hâte d'être à Noël pour le lui offrir !
