Summer Knitting

These last few days, the weather got very hot here, and it got me thinking of summer knitting. I'm an avid knitter, so it takes more than hot weather to stop me from knitting.
When you're travelling, small projects can be a good choice, and if it's very hot, you can switch to lighter fibres such as cotton or linen. On the other hand, if you have some more spare time, summer can also be great to catch up on your big projects and to get ready for fall.

Smaller projects

Small projects are perfect to take everywhere on vacation. You can knit them in the train, the plane, and even on the beach. They don't take much space in your bags, and are not too warm on your knees.

With smaller projects, you can even keep on knitting DK or Worsted wool, and start thinking about your fall wardrobe.

If you're looking for a quick knit, a hat or a cowl is perfect for you.

If you have more time to knit, and you need a more challenging project, a pair of sock is ideal because it takes some times to knit, and very few space.

Cotton, Linen, Bamboo

Less warm than animal fibers, cotton, linen and bamboo blend are a great way to keep knitting garments in the midst of summer. Plus, you can make things you can actually wear right away!

Why not make some Wet Hot Summer Shorts?

I have this beautiful skein of Knitting in France, hand-dyed, 100% Pima Cotton, and I'm still wondering what to knit with it...

Getting ready for fall

If you're going away on peaceful vacations or just staying at home chilling for one or two weeks, you can start making your first fall sweater! I know I will soon start to swatch for my fall sweater!

Knit that enormous project you don't have the time to make during the year 

If you're fearless, summer vacations is the time for your crazier, most complicated, or gigantic projects!

One year, I carried around with me this huge wrap-ghan for my girlfriend, her birthday being the 13th of August. I even took it camping for two weeks!

So I guess in Summer, you can knit whatever you want!

Ces derniers temps, le climat s'est bien réchauffé ici, et cela m'a fait songer aux tricots d'été. Je suis une grande tricoteuse, et il me faut plus qu'un peu de chaleur pour m'empêcher de prendre mes aiguilles.
Quand vous voyagez, les petits projets peuvent être un bon choix, et s'il fait très chaud, vous pouvez passer à des fibres plus légères comme le coton et le lin. D'un autre côté, si vous avez beaucoup de temps libre, les vacances peuvent également être un bon moment pour avancer sur vos gros projets et vous préparer pour l'automne.

Petits projets

Les petits projets sont parfaits pour emporter partout avec soi en vacances. Vous pouvez les tricoter dans le train, l'avion et même sur la plage. Ils ne prennent que peu de place dans vos sacs, et ne sont pas trop chauds sur vos genoux.
Avec de petits projets, vous pouvez continuer à tricoter des laines DK ou Worsted et commencer à penser à votre garde-robe d'automne.
Si vous recherchez un tricot rapide, un bonnet ou un snood est parfait pour vous.
Si vous avez plus de temps et recherchez un peu plus de challenge, une paire de chaussettes est idéale parce que ça prend un peu de temps à tricoter et très peu de place dans les bagages.

Coton, Lin, Bambou et compagnie

Moins chaudes que les fibres animales, les mélanges de coton, lin et bambou sont un bon moyen de continuer à tricoter des pulls et vêtements en plein été. En plus, vous pouvez les porter immédiatement !

Préparez vous pour l'automne

Si vous partez pour des vacances posées, ou restez à la maison vous détendre pendant une ou deux semaines, vous pouvez vous attaquer à votre premier pull d'automne! De mon côté, je vais bientôt commencer mes échantillons pour mon pull de rentrée !

Tricotez ce projet gigantesque que vous n'avez jamais le temps de faire pendant l'année

Si vous êtes téméraires, les vacances d'été sont le moment rêvé pour vos projets les plus fous, les plus compliqués et les plus gigantesques !
Un été, je me suis promenée partout avec cet immense wrap-ghan pour ma copine, son anniversaire étant le 13 août. Je l'ai même amené en camping itinérant pendant deux semaines !

En résumé, je dirais que l'été, tricotez ce qui vous plait !

Update, work in progress and exciting new designs

I haven't posted much here in the past few months, so it's time for a little update. 

In december, I went on a train trip all around eastern Europe, and brought tons of yarns and inspiration. 

Two of my friends asked me for matching cowl and hats. I designed them between Hamburg and Budapest. You can see little wagons on the bottom, and castles lost in the mountains in the middle, that I saw from the train window while crossing Hungaria. I added huge pom poms to the hats and gifted these to my friends, but they agreed to a photoshoot sometime soon, so I'll have pretty pictures to release these designs. I'm still hesitating between two names : Rail traveller or Trans-european Hat and Cowl. I'm open to any suggestions !

Je n'ai guère posté sur ce blog ces derniers temps, alors il est temps de faire un petit point.

En décembre, je suis partie en interrail dans toute l'Europe de l'est, et j'ai ramené des tonnes de laines et d'inspirations.

Deux de mes amis m'ont demandé des bonnets et cols assortir. Je les ai créé entre Hambourg et Budapest. Vous pouvez voir les petits wagons en bas, et les châteaux perdus dans les montagnes au milieu, que j'ai vu depuis ma fenêtre de train en traversant la Hongrie. J'ai ajouté deux gros pom poms aux bonnets, et j'ai offert le tout à mes amis, mais ils sont d'accord pour un photoshoot un de ces jours, alors j'aurai de jolies photos pour sortir le modèle. J'hésite encore entre deux noms : Rail traveller ou Trans-european Hat and Cowl. Si vous avez des suggestions !

In Skopje, I found a huge skein of handspun natural yarn in the Bazaar. The man was selling hand-knitted items, and I think the skein was there just for decoration, so he was quite surprised when I asked him about the yarn. The price was ridiculous to me (I should buy yarn in Macedonia more often), but I think it made his week and when he got home to his wife, he probably told her "stop knitting, there's no use, now the tourists are buying the yarn !"

I still don't know what to do with these 500 grams, I don't even now what weight it is, dk ? worsted ? I've got some experimenting to do !

A Skopje, j'ai trouvé une énorme boule de laine filée à la main dans le Bazar. Le marchand vendait des objets tricotés main, et je pense que la pelote servait juste de décoration, alors il était un peu surpris quand je lui ai demandé la laine. Le prix était vraiment dérisoire pour moi, mais je pense qu'il a du rentrer et dire à sa femme "plus la peine de tricoter, les touristes achètent la laine maintenant !"

Je ne sais toujours pas que faire avec ces 500 gralles. Je ne sais même pas de quelle grosseur de laine il s'agit !

In Ljubljana, I found the most amazing yarn store called Soven filled with natural yarn and fibers of all colors. I bought 3 skein of a grey aran 50%alpaca 50% wool, and when I got home, I immediately found the perfect project for it : Little Wave cardigan, by Gudrun Johnston. The gauge was off so I had to make some modification, but I'll talk some more about this cardigan in another post when it's finished (I still need to knit the front bands, collar and pockets).

A Ljubljana, j'ai trouvé un magasin de laine génial, rempli de laines et de fibres naturelles de toutes les couleurs. J'ai acheté trois pelotes d'une laine aran grise 50%alpaga, 50%laine, et dès que je suis rentrée, j'ai trouvé le projet parfait : Little Wave cardigan, by Gudrun Johnston. L'échantillon ne correspondait pas, donc j'ai du faire quelques modifications, mais je vous en reparlerai plus dans un autre post, quand le gilet sera fini.

Back from my rail trip, I spent christmas in Padova with my family (I think I travelled more in this month of december than I ever did in my entire life before). On our second night there, we arrived at dusk to the biggest place of the city, Prato della Valle, and it was covered in a huge fog through which we could barely distinguish the beautiful statues. It was a very strange, gloomy atmosphere. The third day, when we crossed once again that place, it was snowing and everything was white and peaceful. When I got back, I was hanted by this place and these two different times, and I designed Padova hat, a super bulky hat for the snow and fog in Padova. (I'll release the pattern as soon as I'm able to take pretty pictures)

De retour de mon voyage en train, j'ai passé Noël à Padoue en famille (je crois avoir plus voyagé pendant ce mois de décembre que pendant tout le reste de ma vie). Le deuxième soir, on est arrivé au crépuscule sur la plus grande place de la ville, Prato della valle, et elle était couverte d'un épais brouillard, on parvenait à peine à distinguer les belles statues, il y avait une atmosphère étrange, un peu lugubre. Le lendemain, quand on a traversé de nouveau cette place, c'était sous la neige cette fois, tout était blanc et apaisé. En rentrant, j'était hantée par la vision de cette place à ces deux moments, et j'ai créé un bonnet : Padova Hat, en grosse laine bulky, pour la neige et le brouillard sur Padoue. (Je sortirai le modèle dès que j'aurai pu prendre de belles photos).

I also finished this design that I was talking about in november. It's a sock design that I called Verdon because of the house my girlfriend has in Le-Verdon-sur-Mer, near the beach, that belonged to her grandmother and has a very 60s-retro charm. I really love this design, and I'm currently looking for testers here (I'm hoping to release it in February), but I can't seem to find anyone interested, so I'm starting to wonder if it's going to work. Maybe it's not original enough ?

J'ai aussi fini ce design dont je vous parlais en novembre. C'esr une paire de chaussettes que j'ai appellées Verdon à cause de la maison que ma copine possède au Verdon-sur-Mer, près de la plage. Cette maison appartenait à sa grand-mère, et elle a gardé tout son charme retro des 60s. J'aime beaucoup ce design, et je cherche actuellement des testeurs ici, mais pour l'instant je ne trouve personne intéressé, alors je commence à me poser des questions. Ce n'est peut-être pas assez original ?

And finally, I just finished this morning knitting a pretty lace scarf for my sister's birthday. It's blocking right now so I don't have a picture yet, but I plan on writing the pattern and releasing it as a free one in a few days, so I'll tell you more about it very soon !

Et pour finir, je viens juste d'achever ce matin une jolie écharpe en dentelle pour l'anniversaire de ma soeur. Elle est en train de sécher, alors je n'ai pas encore de photo, mais je pense écrire le modèle et le sortir comme patron gratuit dans les prochains jour, donc je vous en dirai plus très bientôt !

Photo tutorial : Teinture naturelle à la garance / Natural dyeing with madder

I just received a case of big natural wool and decided to start again experimenting with natural dyeing. I dyed a skein with a mixture of plants called "henné noir" but there is no henna nor indigo in it. Well, I got a beautiful brown with it. I dyed another skein with madder. Last time I tried dyeing with madder, I got a very light pink so I was really not satisfied. But this time, I obtained the perfect madder red. Let me show you how I did :

J'ai reçu, il y a quelques jours, un grand carton de laine naturelle et j'ai décidé de me remettre à expérimenter la teinture naturelle. J'ai teint un écheveau avec une mixture de plantes appelée "henné noir" mais il n'y a ni henné, ni indigo dedans. Enfin, j'ai obtenu un très beau marron. Et j'ai teint un deuxième écheveau avec de la garance. La dernière fois, je n'avais obtenu qu'un léger rose, pas très satisfaisant. Mais cette fois, j'ai réussi à faire le parfait rouge garance. Voici comment je m'y suis prise :

What you need : a big pot, natural white yarn, alum powder, madder powder
Ce dont vous avez besoin : une grande casserole, de la laine naturelle blanche, de l'alum, de la garance en poudre

Prepare the dye a day before dyeing : mix madder powder (25 g for 100g of yarn) with water and keep it in the sunlight
Préparez la teinture un jour à l'avance : mélanger la garance (25 g pour 100 g de laine) avec de l'eau et conservez la au soleil

Mordanting the wool : wash the yarn with water, put alum (25g for 100g of yarn) with water in the pot, put the yarn wet in it and heat slowly for an hour, do not boil. Let the temperature cool off for a few hours then rince the yarn
Mordancer la laine : lavez la laine avec de l'eau, mettez de l'alum (25g pour 100 g de laine) avec de l'eau dans la casserole, plongez-y la laine mouillée et chauffez doucement pendant une heure, ne faites pas bouillir. Laissez la température redescendre pendant plusieurs heures puis rincez la laine

Prepare the dye bath : Put your dye into the pot, add water if necessary
Préparer le bain de teinture : Mettez votre teinture dans la casserole, rajoutez de l'eau si nécessaire

Put your yarn rinced into the dye bath, heat at average temperature for an hour, do not boil
Mettez votre laine rincée dans le bain de teinture et faites cuire pendant 1 h à température moyenne, ne faites jamais bouillir

Let the dye bath cool off
Laissez le bain refroidir

Rince abundantly
Rincez abondamment 

Wash the yarn with a detergent for wool
Lavez la laine avec une lessive à laine

Let it dry
Faites sécher

Tadaaa !

New project / Nouveau projet

Reorganizing my stash the other day, I came across a gorgeous sock yarn that I hand-dyed with henna a few months ago and had completely forgot about. How could this be just sitting there ? I had to find the perfect project for it ! But it's a 5 ply yarn, and most sock patterns are for 4 ply yarn, so I had a hard time finding the perfect one. I ended up designing my own and I'm quite thrilled with the result so far. I'll probably try to submit the design for publication somewhere.

En réorganisant mes laines l'autre jour, j'ai découvert une superbe pelote de laine à chaussette que j'avais teinte au henné il y a quelque mois et que j'avais complètement oubliée. Que faisait-elle là, inutilisée ? Il fallait que je trouve le projet parfait pour elle ! Mais c'est une laine sport, et la plupart des modèles de chaussettes sont en laine fingering, alors j'ai eu du mal à trouver un modèle parfait. J'ai fini par l'écrire moi-même, et je suis très contente du résultat pour l'instant. Je vais probablement essayer de le soumettre à publication quelque part.
