Beatnik - Cable Sweater in Soft Donegal - Pull à torsades

Last summer, my sister went to Ireland and brought me a ton of beautiful irish yarns. I recently decided that I should do something with it and chose a cable sweater : Beatnik by Norah Gaughan, a free pattern published on Knitty.

I'm almost done with the back and I love it so much already ! It is a very interesting knit and the pattern goes perfectly with the Soft Donegal Yarn. Unfortunately, my sister was so overwelmed in the yarn shop in Dublin with all the beautiful yarns that she couldn't chose only one colorway, and I don't have enough yarn to make the sweater all in white. I have however three skeins of a beautiful beige and I am contemplating the possibility of making contrasting sleeves. Otherwise I will have to wait for my own trip to Dublin in January to buy the few missing skeins.

L'été dernier, ma soeur est allée en Irlande et m'a ramené une tonne de superbes laines irlandaises. Je me suis dit récemment qu'il fallait que je songe à en faire quelque chose, et j'ai alors choisi un pull à torsades : Beatnik de Norah Gaughan, un modèle gratuit publié sur Knitty (en anglais).

J'ai presque fini le dos et je l'adore déjà ! C'est un tricot très intéressant et la laine Soft Donegal va parfaitement avec le modèle. Malheureusement, ma soeur ne savait pas où donner de la tête dans le magasin à Dublin avec tant de belles laines, et elle n'a pas pu choisir une seule couleur. Je n'ai donc pas assez de laine pour faire le pull tout en blanc. J'ai en revanche trois écheveaux d'un beau beige et j'envisage la possibilité de tricoter des manches contrastantes. Sinon je vais devoir attendre mon propre voyage à Dublin en janvier prochain pour acheter les quelques pelotes manquantes.

Update, work in progress and exciting new designs

I haven't posted much here in the past few months, so it's time for a little update. 

In december, I went on a train trip all around eastern Europe, and brought tons of yarns and inspiration. 

Two of my friends asked me for matching cowl and hats. I designed them between Hamburg and Budapest. You can see little wagons on the bottom, and castles lost in the mountains in the middle, that I saw from the train window while crossing Hungaria. I added huge pom poms to the hats and gifted these to my friends, but they agreed to a photoshoot sometime soon, so I'll have pretty pictures to release these designs. I'm still hesitating between two names : Rail traveller or Trans-european Hat and Cowl. I'm open to any suggestions !

Je n'ai guère posté sur ce blog ces derniers temps, alors il est temps de faire un petit point.

En décembre, je suis partie en interrail dans toute l'Europe de l'est, et j'ai ramené des tonnes de laines et d'inspirations.

Deux de mes amis m'ont demandé des bonnets et cols assortir. Je les ai créé entre Hambourg et Budapest. Vous pouvez voir les petits wagons en bas, et les châteaux perdus dans les montagnes au milieu, que j'ai vu depuis ma fenêtre de train en traversant la Hongrie. J'ai ajouté deux gros pom poms aux bonnets, et j'ai offert le tout à mes amis, mais ils sont d'accord pour un photoshoot un de ces jours, alors j'aurai de jolies photos pour sortir le modèle. J'hésite encore entre deux noms : Rail traveller ou Trans-european Hat and Cowl. Si vous avez des suggestions !

In Skopje, I found a huge skein of handspun natural yarn in the Bazaar. The man was selling hand-knitted items, and I think the skein was there just for decoration, so he was quite surprised when I asked him about the yarn. The price was ridiculous to me (I should buy yarn in Macedonia more often), but I think it made his week and when he got home to his wife, he probably told her "stop knitting, there's no use, now the tourists are buying the yarn !"

I still don't know what to do with these 500 grams, I don't even now what weight it is, dk ? worsted ? I've got some experimenting to do !

A Skopje, j'ai trouvé une énorme boule de laine filée à la main dans le Bazar. Le marchand vendait des objets tricotés main, et je pense que la pelote servait juste de décoration, alors il était un peu surpris quand je lui ai demandé la laine. Le prix était vraiment dérisoire pour moi, mais je pense qu'il a du rentrer et dire à sa femme "plus la peine de tricoter, les touristes achètent la laine maintenant !"

Je ne sais toujours pas que faire avec ces 500 gralles. Je ne sais même pas de quelle grosseur de laine il s'agit !

In Ljubljana, I found the most amazing yarn store called Soven filled with natural yarn and fibers of all colors. I bought 3 skein of a grey aran 50%alpaca 50% wool, and when I got home, I immediately found the perfect project for it : Little Wave cardigan, by Gudrun Johnston. The gauge was off so I had to make some modification, but I'll talk some more about this cardigan in another post when it's finished (I still need to knit the front bands, collar and pockets).

A Ljubljana, j'ai trouvé un magasin de laine génial, rempli de laines et de fibres naturelles de toutes les couleurs. J'ai acheté trois pelotes d'une laine aran grise 50%alpaga, 50%laine, et dès que je suis rentrée, j'ai trouvé le projet parfait : Little Wave cardigan, by Gudrun Johnston. L'échantillon ne correspondait pas, donc j'ai du faire quelques modifications, mais je vous en reparlerai plus dans un autre post, quand le gilet sera fini.

Back from my rail trip, I spent christmas in Padova with my family (I think I travelled more in this month of december than I ever did in my entire life before). On our second night there, we arrived at dusk to the biggest place of the city, Prato della Valle, and it was covered in a huge fog through which we could barely distinguish the beautiful statues. It was a very strange, gloomy atmosphere. The third day, when we crossed once again that place, it was snowing and everything was white and peaceful. When I got back, I was hanted by this place and these two different times, and I designed Padova hat, a super bulky hat for the snow and fog in Padova. (I'll release the pattern as soon as I'm able to take pretty pictures)

De retour de mon voyage en train, j'ai passé Noël à Padoue en famille (je crois avoir plus voyagé pendant ce mois de décembre que pendant tout le reste de ma vie). Le deuxième soir, on est arrivé au crépuscule sur la plus grande place de la ville, Prato della valle, et elle était couverte d'un épais brouillard, on parvenait à peine à distinguer les belles statues, il y avait une atmosphère étrange, un peu lugubre. Le lendemain, quand on a traversé de nouveau cette place, c'était sous la neige cette fois, tout était blanc et apaisé. En rentrant, j'était hantée par la vision de cette place à ces deux moments, et j'ai créé un bonnet : Padova Hat, en grosse laine bulky, pour la neige et le brouillard sur Padoue. (Je sortirai le modèle dès que j'aurai pu prendre de belles photos).

I also finished this design that I was talking about in november. It's a sock design that I called Verdon because of the house my girlfriend has in Le-Verdon-sur-Mer, near the beach, that belonged to her grandmother and has a very 60s-retro charm. I really love this design, and I'm currently looking for testers here (I'm hoping to release it in February), but I can't seem to find anyone interested, so I'm starting to wonder if it's going to work. Maybe it's not original enough ?

J'ai aussi fini ce design dont je vous parlais en novembre. C'esr une paire de chaussettes que j'ai appellées Verdon à cause de la maison que ma copine possède au Verdon-sur-Mer, près de la plage. Cette maison appartenait à sa grand-mère, et elle a gardé tout son charme retro des 60s. J'aime beaucoup ce design, et je cherche actuellement des testeurs ici, mais pour l'instant je ne trouve personne intéressé, alors je commence à me poser des questions. Ce n'est peut-être pas assez original ?

And finally, I just finished this morning knitting a pretty lace scarf for my sister's birthday. It's blocking right now so I don't have a picture yet, but I plan on writing the pattern and releasing it as a free one in a few days, so I'll tell you more about it very soon !

Et pour finir, je viens juste d'achever ce matin une jolie écharpe en dentelle pour l'anniversaire de ma soeur. Elle est en train de sécher, alors je n'ai pas encore de photo, mais je pense écrire le modèle et le sortir comme patron gratuit dans les prochains jour, donc je vous en dirai plus très bientôt !

New project / Nouveau projet

Reorganizing my stash the other day, I came across a gorgeous sock yarn that I hand-dyed with henna a few months ago and had completely forgot about. How could this be just sitting there ? I had to find the perfect project for it ! But it's a 5 ply yarn, and most sock patterns are for 4 ply yarn, so I had a hard time finding the perfect one. I ended up designing my own and I'm quite thrilled with the result so far. I'll probably try to submit the design for publication somewhere.

En réorganisant mes laines l'autre jour, j'ai découvert une superbe pelote de laine à chaussette que j'avais teinte au henné il y a quelque mois et que j'avais complètement oubliée. Que faisait-elle là, inutilisée ? Il fallait que je trouve le projet parfait pour elle ! Mais c'est une laine sport, et la plupart des modèles de chaussettes sont en laine fingering, alors j'ai eu du mal à trouver un modèle parfait. J'ai fini par l'écrire moi-même, et je suis très contente du résultat pour l'instant. Je vais probablement essayer de le soumettre à publication quelque part.

Socks for my sister

My sister is asking for socks again, so I started knitting this lovely pattern, and it's really coming up quickly. I think I'm getting good at knitting socks, it doesn't feel like it take forever anymore, and I'm quite enjoying myself. I already finished one sock :

Des chaussettes pour ma sœur

Ma sœur me demande encore des chaussettes, alors je me suis mise à tricoter ce joli modèle, et ça avance plutôt vite. Je crois que je deviens douée pour les chaussettes, je n'ai plus l'impression que ça prend mille ans, et je m'amuse bien. J'ai déjà fini une chaussette :

2 scrap yarn blankets

A few months back, I made a blanket for my cat with lots of scrap yarn. My cat loves it', but he's not the only one ! My mother asked for a similar one for her cat, and Lilas' mother thought it was too pretty to be a cat blanket, so I'm going to knit one for her too !

2 plaids avec des restes de laine

Il y a quelques mois, j'ai fait un plaid pour mon chat avec beaucoup de restes de laine. Mon chat l'adore, mais il n'est pas le seul ! Ma mère m'a demandé de lui en faire un pour son chat, et la mère de Lilas pense qu'il est trop joli pour être un plaid à chat, donc je vais en tricoter un pour elle aussi !

A platypus hot water bottle !

I promised to make this awesome hot water bottle cozy for Lilas last year and I didn't have time to do it before christmas. So this year, I'm planning ahead, and I already decided on the yarn from my stash : Cascade 220 Heathers and Lana Gatto Class.

J'ai promis de faire cette géniale bouillotte à Lilas l'année dernière, mais je n'ai pas eu le temps avant Noël. Alors cette année, je m'y prend à l'avance, et j'ai déjà décidé des laines à utiliser dans mes stocks : Cascade 220 Heathers et Lana Gatto Class.

Projets en cours / Work in progress

Mon temps de tricot a été assez limité ces derniers temps. J'ai passé tout l'été à finir mon mémoire, et ai eu peu de temps pour préparer l'hiver et mes nouveaux modèles. Mais maintenant, mon master arrive à sa fin, et ne pourrai de toute façon pas faire de stage avant le mois de mars, donc je vais avoir tout l'hiver pour me consacrer au tricot !

Voici ce qui traîne sur mes aiguilles :

My knitting time has been quite limited these past few months. I spent all summer writing my master thesis, and I didn't have much time to prepare for winter and to create new patterns. But now that my master is over, and because I won't be able to do another internship before march, I will have all winter to knit and design !

Here's what's on my needle :

Cabled crewneck pullover pour Lilas. Je le tricote en Dolce di luce, une laine de Luce Laine Tricot que j'adore. Elle est 70% mérinos, 30% angora, donc très douce, mais solide, avec un grand choix de couleurs et à un prix très raisonable. Le modèle en lui-même est assez facile à tricoter et plutôt original avec du point de riz entre les torsades, et juste quand je commençais à m'ennuyer, je suis arrivée aux manches qui adoptent une construction que je n'avais jamais expérimentées. Le pull est tricoté à plat, puis on joint les épaules et les manches sont tricotées depuis les épaules, à plat, en relevant des mailles. J'avais déjà fait ce genre de constructions en rond, mais jamais à plat. Seul bémol, les manches semblent extrèmement larges par rapport au reste du pull, et j'ai du resserer les dernières diminutions pour qu'elles ne soient pas trop longues.

Cables crewneck pullover for my girlfriend Lilas. The yarn is Dolce di luce, from a french brand Luce Laine Tricot. It's 70% mérinos, 30% angora. I love it. First, it's very soft, it has a great stitch definition, the color choice is amazing and the price very reasonable. The pattern is very simple, but quite original with seed stitch between cables. The sweater is knitted flat, then the shoulder are joined and the sleeves knitted from the top, flat, by picking up stitches. I already used that kind of construction in the round, but never flat so it was quite interesting. But I'm afraid the sleeves are quite big compared to the body, and I had to change the last decreases so they wouldn't be to long.

J'ai encore la deuxième manche à tricoter, le col, et l'assemblage qui ne devrait pas prendre trop de temps. Mais je me suis laissée distraire par un nouveau projet, un nouveau modèle fait en Cascade Heritage Silk et inspirée de Monica Vitti dans le film L'Eclisse d'Antonioni, un de mes films préférés.

I still have the other sleeve to knit, the neck and assembling shouldn't take too much time, but I got caught up in another project made in Cascade Heritage Silk and inspired by Monica Vitti in the movie L'Eclisse by Antonioni, one of my favorite movies ever.
